Short answer
Bulky-item pickup is how you remove large things like furniture, mattresses, and appliances in Los Angeles. Most cities give residents a free scheduled pickup, with limits. For same-day removal, items over the limit, or anything you cannot move to the curb, a flat-price service hauls it out. Junkline shows you a flat price before you book and hauls it the same day.
What counts as a bulky item
A bulky item is anything too big for your regular trash, recycling, or green bin: couches and sectionals, mattresses and box springs, dressers and tables, refrigerators, washers and dryers, other large appliances, TVs and electronics, and similar oversized items. Construction debris and hazardous materials are handled separately (more on that below).
The two ways to get bulky items removed in LA
Free city pickup. Your city or its contracted hauler collects a set number of bulky items a year, on a schedule, from the curb. It is free if you qualify, can wait for the scheduled day, and can move the items out yourself.
Flat-price removal. A company like Junkline carries the items out from anywhere on the property for one flat price, same day. You lift nothing, and there is no limit on how much goes.
Free bulky-item pickup by city
Who runs bulky pickup depends on where you live. Only the City of Los Angeles uses LA Sanitation (LASAN); every independent city runs its own program or uses a contracted hauler. Here is the breakdown across our service area, checked against each program's official page.
| City or area | Who runs it | Free bulky pickup |
|---|---|---|
| City of Los Angeles | LA Sanitation (LASAN) | Free for city trash customers, scheduled through 311, with limits per request |
| Santa Monica | City Resource Recovery & Recycling | Free by request through 311, up to 5 items, usually within a week |
| Culver City | City Environmental Programs & Operations | 1 to 2 free pickups a year, up to 6 items each, by appointment |
| Beverly Hills | City Public Works | Free for alley-served homes on the twice-monthly alley cleanups; curbside pickup is a billed city service |
| West Hollywood | Athens Services | Free by request through Athens, about 2 items, on your regular trash day |
| Long Beach | City Environmental Services Bureau | Up to 12 free Special Collections a year, 8 large items or 25 bags each |
| Pasadena | City Public Works | 2 free pickups a year for city refuse customers, by appointment; multifamily buildings use their own hauler |
| Glendale | City Integrated Waste (1 to 4 units) | Free by request for houses and buildings up to 4 units; larger buildings go through franchised haulers |
| Burbank | City Public Works Solid Waste | Free for standard items on your trash day; certain items carry a special-handling fee |
| Inglewood | Republic Services (Consolidated Disposal) | Unlimited free pickups, single-family and multifamily, scheduled at least a day ahead |
| El Segundo | EDCO | Up to 6 items per pickup, 4 times a year |
| Torrance | City trash service | 1 free large-item pickup a year, up to 20 items |
| Azusa | Athens Services | Free by request, scheduled before your collection day |
| Irwindale | Athens Services | 2 city-wide clean-up campaigns a year, spring and fall |
| Santa Clarita | Burrtec Waste Industries | 4 free pickups a year, up to 3 items each |
| Lancaster | WM (Waste Management) | 4 free pickups a year, up to 4 items each, plus 2 free landfill vouchers |
| Marina del Rey | LA County franchise hauler (not LASAN) | Service runs through the County's franchise hauler; check the County's bulky-item page or your building for current terms |
Programs change their rules, so treat the table as the map and your city's official page as the law. If you live in the City of Los Angeles itself, the free program is genuinely good; we compare it against paid removal in detail in free city bulky pickup vs paid removal.
When free pickup works, and when to pay
The free program is the right call when you qualify, can wait for the scheduled day, can move the items to the curb, and you are within the item limit. A flat-price pickup makes more sense when you need it gone the same day, when you have more than the program allows, when the item is up a flight of stairs or there is no curb to stage it on, when the program will not take the item, or when you have already used your free pickups for the year. In a city like Irwindale, where free pickup only happens twice a year, paying is often the only way to clear something now.
