What LASAN's free pickup actually includes
LA Sanitation & Environment (LASAN) runs a genuinely good free program for residents of the City of Los Angeles. If you qualify, you get:
- Up to 10 free scheduled collections per year, with up to 10 bulky items per collection — couches, mattresses, tables, dressers, and similar large items.
- Scheduling by phone or app: call the 24-hour line at 1-800-773-2489, dial 311, or use the MyLA311 app, at least one business day before your regular trash day.
- A separate, free e-waste pickup for large electronics like TVs — and it doesn't count against your 10 bulky appointments.
- As an alternative, free Saturday drop-off events at five district yards around the city each month, if you'd rather haul items in yourself.
For a lot of everyday situations — one old dresser, a broken chair, a mattress you can move — this is the right call. It's free, and the city recycles or donates a good share of what it collects.
The catches (this is where people get stuck)
The program is free, but "free" is doing a lot of work in that sentence. Four real limits:
- It's curbside-only — you carry it out. LASAN picks up from the curb. Getting a sleeper sofa down two flights and out to the street is entirely on you (or whoever you can recruit). For heavy items, up stairs, or out of a back bedroom, that's the whole hard part of the job.
- It runs on the city's timeline, not yours. You schedule ahead of your trash day, and because demand is high, the actual pickup can take several days or longer. If you're mid-move, closing a sale, or turning over a rental this week, that's often too slow.
- There's a cap and there are rules. Ten items per collection sounds like a lot until you're clearing a full garage or a whole apartment. Items left at the curb outside the rules can draw a citation.
- It won't take everything. Construction and renovation debris, car parts and tires, commercial waste, and cardboard are not collected on a bulky pickup. Hazardous materials (paint, solvents, batteries) have to go to a S.A.F.E. Center instead.
The catch most people miss: half of "LA" isn't served by LASAN
This is the part almost no guide mentions, and it's the single most useful thing to know. LASAN only serves properties inside City of Los Angeles limits. A lot of what people call "LA" is actually separate cities with their own (different, often more limited) programs. LASAN does not serve Burbank, Glendale, Pasadena, Santa Monica, Culver City, West Hollywood, Inglewood, Torrance, or Long Beach, among others.
On top of that, most apartment buildings don't use LASAN bulky pickup at all — larger multi-family properties are typically served by a franchise hauler (recycLA) through the building, not by the free resident program.
So before you plan around the free option, confirm two things: that your address is inside the City of LA, and that your building actually uses LASAN. If you're in Santa Monica, Glendale, or a recycLA apartment, the free city pickup simply isn't on the table — and a paid pickup (which serves every one of those cities and buildings) is your realistic option. When to use LASAN — and when to book a paid pickup
Use LASAN when: you're a City of LA resident, the items are already near the curb or easy to move, you're under the 10-item limit, and you're not in a hurry. There's no reason to pay to get rid of one old chair you can wheel to the street.
Book a paid pickup when any of these are true:
- The item is heavy or awkward and it's up stairs or in a back room — a fridge, a sectional, a piano.

- It's a big job — a full garage cleanout or an apartment's worth of stuff, well past 10 items.
- LASAN won't take it — renovation debris, or a mix of items and junk.
