Short answer
To get rid of a couch in LA: donate it if it's clean and undamaged, sell it if it's nice, or have it hauled if it's worn, broken, or you just want it gone. Sofas are heavy and awkward on stairs, and charities won't take stained or torn ones — so for most old couches, removal is the realistic route. A sofa is a flat $159, carried out from any floor, with no dragging it to the curb.

Donate it — if it's in good shape
A clean, sturdy couch is welcome at charities that offer free pickup: Habitat for Humanity ReStore, St. Vincent de Paul, and The Salvation Army all collect furniture across LA, though pickups can book out one to three weeks. Schedule early and have it ready.
The couch charities will refuse
Most won't take a sofa with stains, tears, pet damage, a sagging frame, or a smoke smell. If your couch has seen better days, donation is off the table — recycle it or have it hauled instead.
Sell or give it away
A nicer sofa can sell on a marketplace, or go fast (and free) through a local Buy Nothing group. Set a deadline so it doesn't linger — if it hasn't moved in a week, switch to pickup or removal.
Free city curbside pickup
If you're an eligible City of Los Angeles resident, the city's free bulky-item pickup takes couches. The trade-offs: it's curbside-only (you get a heavy sofa to the street yourself), it can take days to weeks, and it doesn't serve independent cities or most apartments. Our LASAN pickup guide covers who qualifies.
The hard part: getting it out
The real challenge with a couch usually isn't disposal — it's the doorways and stairs. Full sofas are heavy and rigid, sectionals come apart (and sometimes fight you), and a third-floor walk-up turns a quick job into a workout.
Stairs are included
With flat pricing, a couch is one price whether it's on the ground floor or up three flights — the crew does the carry, so you never wrestle it down the stairs or to the curb.
When paid removal is worth it
- The couch is worn, stained, or broken — charities won't take it.
- It's heavy or a sectional, and it's up stairs or through tight doorways.
- You need it gone fast — often same-day when you book early.
- You're swapping in a new sofa and want the old one gone the same trip.
- Your address isn't served by city pickup.
With flat pricing you approve the total before booking, and the crew carries it out from any floor. See the couch removal page or the full price list, and for the rest of the room, our old-furniture guide.
